Jaipur is the largest city
in Rajasthan and was built in the eighteenth century by Sawai Jai Singh as India's first
planned city. Jaipur is a major tourist attraction amongst Indian as well as
international travelers. It belongs to the tourist Golden Triangle of
Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. It
hosts several attractions like the City
Palace, Govind Dev ji Temple, Vidhan Sabha, Birla Temple,
several massive Rajput forts and so
on. It also serves as a stepping stone for travelers heading to the desert
cities of Jodhpur and Jaisalmer along with religious places
like Ajmer & Pushkar.
Jaipur is often called the Pink City in reference to its
distinctly coloured buildings, which were originally painted this color to
imitate the red sandstone architecture of Mughal cities. The present earthy red
color originates from repainting of the buildings undertaken for a visit by the
Prince of Wales in 1876.Palace hotels, once home to India’s royal families, and
painted elephants parading along the streets are all part of the colorful exoticism
of Jaipur. Within an hour’s drive of the city are sensuous, embellished palace
rooms to view, tribal villages to visit, handwoven and embroidered Kashmir
shawls to buy and a world of modern Indian design to uncover.
Jaipur has always had a tradition
of lavish palaces, handcrafted jewelry, sculpture and art. Block-printed
cottons, handmade papers, hand-bound books and enamelwork are among the crafts
still produced in the city today. Jaipur is also the place to scour bazaars and
emporiums for the cashmere shawls, block-printed quilts, diamond rings, and
fine textiles that turn up—at much higher prices—in trendsetting stores from
Madison Avenue to Melrose Place.
Jaipur is considered by many to
be one of the best planned cities. It has been claimed to be the first planned
city in India. It was at that time one of the best planned cities in Asia. Jaipur
is a major tourist destination in India. In the 2008 Conde Nast Traveler
Readers Choice Survey, Jaipur was ranked the 7th best place to visit
in Asia.
